Introduction

The I13xL1A0 is a three-channel passive digital isolator designed for use with Vicor digital monitors and high-performance power conversion, regulation, and transformation modules to enable monitoring and control of secondary-referenced digital power systems. Its passive design reduces system complexity, while its compact footprint increases system power density. It is a three-channel, signal-powered logic isolator that uses an air-core magnetic structure to couple power from the input of each channel to the receiver at the channel output. The input is driven by a voltage-driven source with no series current-limiting resistor required; the output is open-collector and performs a logic inversion of the input signal. Compared to optocouplers, the digital isolator is an effective alternative — its low profile is valuable in high-density power systems, and the channel count is optimized for Vicor BCM and DCM converters. With no LED emitter subject to degradation from use and no optical barrier that deteriorates over time, the digital isolator improves system reliability. All three channels share the same internal architecture and nominal performance, but are configured as 2 transmit / 1 receive to enable data transfer between power converters within the system. The digital isolator channels perform a logic inversion of data as it is transferred to the open-collector output. The transmit and receive ports on both sides of the isolation boundary share a common low-side reference to optimize package pin utilization.
