The DS28E38 is an ECDSA public-key-based secure authenticator that integrates Maxim's patented ChipDNA PUF technology. ChipDNA technology involves a physically unclonable function (PUF) that enables the DS28E38 to resist invasive physical attacks in a cost-effective manner. Leveraging random variations in semiconductor device characteristics that occur naturally during wafer fabrication, the ChipDNA circuit generates a unique output value that repeats consistently across time, temperature, and operating voltage. Any attempt to probe or observe ChipDNA operation alters the underlying circuit characteristics, thereby preventing discovery of the unique value used for the chip's cryptographic functions. The DS28E38 uses the ChipDNA output as key material to cryptographically protect all device-stored data and, under user control, optionally as the private key for ECDSA signing operations. With the ChipDNA feature, the device provides a core set of cryptographic tools derived from integrated building blocks, including an asymmetric (ECC-P256) hardware engine, a FIPS/NIST-compliant true random number generator (TRNG), 2Kb of secure EEPROM, a decrement-only counter, and a unique 64-bit ROM identification number (ROM ID). The ECC public/private key functionality operates on the NIST-defined P-256 curve to provide FIPS 186-compliant ECDSA signature generation. The unique ROM ID serves as a fundamental input parameter for cryptographic operations and functions as an electronic serial number in the application. The DS28E38 communicates over a single-contact 1-Wire bus at both standard speed and overdrive. Communication follows the 1-Wire protocol, with the ROM ID serving as the node address in a multi-device 1-Wire network.
