Introduction

AD892E/AD892T is a complete subsystem for recovering binary information from differential channels at transmission rates up to 30 megabits per second. It connects to the output of a preamplifier and performs signal conditioning and data qualification tasks with a minimum of external components. The AD892E/AD892T offers the flexibility to perform both continuous and sampled AGC functions, and is also well suited for embedded, dedicated, or hybrid servo applications. Low droop in fast acquisition and hold modes allows AGC operation within sector headers without affecting channel behavior during read data. Two user-defined filter/equalizer stages are available for maximum design flexibility, greatly simplifying the design of overall channel characteristics. Three low-offset, 50 MHz full-wave rectifiers are provided. One rectifier drives an internal sample-and-hold circuit; this signal is available to the user for setting the attack and decay characteristics of the sample-and-hold. The outputs of the other two rectifiers are used to generate qualification levels and feed a single-ended passive differentiator. Threshold setting and differentiation are performed by an external RLC network. The AD892E/AD892T provides both level and time-domain qualification. Level qualification uses a user-defined threshold level on the half-cycle rectified data waveform, applied to the level qualification comparator. The output of this comparator drives the data input of a master-slave flip-flop. A second matched comparator detects zero crossings and clocks the flip-flop.
