Introduction

The 8288 optimizes 8086 or 8088 operation by providing command and control timing generation when the CPU is in maximum mode. It offers highly flexible configuration for large systems while adding powerful bipolar drive capability. The 8288 uses bipolar technology and is packaged in a 20-pin plastic or ceramic DIP. The command logic decodes three CPU status lines (S0̄, S1̄, S2̄) to determine which command to issue. In I/O bus mode, with the IOB pin driven high, a single 8288 bus controller can handle two external buses; the CPU accesses the I/O bus without waiting, and all I/O command lines are always enabled. In system bus mode, with the IOB pin driven low, intended for single-bus configurations, commands are not issued until 115ns after the AEN line is asserted. Command outputs include memory read, memory write, and I/O read commands; control outputs include data enable, data transmit/receive, and master cascade enable/peripheral data enable.
