Introduction

The MAX20800 series string optimizer enables maximum power point tracking for PV strings, delivering significantly improved energy harvesting efficiency and reliability compared to standard PV modules and those using module-level maximum power point tracking. PV cells can only output maximum power under specific electrical conditions, which vary considerably with irradiance and temperature. Series connections of PV cells substantially amplify the effects of cell mismatch, preventing optimal power and energy output under real-world operating conditions. The MAX20800 string optimizer enables a string of PV cells to deliver its aggregate maximum power across a wide range of load conditions. This enhanced electrical flexibility eliminates mismatch-induced power losses in PV strings and arrays, ultimately increasing energy yield and system design flexibility. The string optimizer also offers additional unique benefits: reduced performance degradation of PV modules over their operational lifetime, elimination of high losses associated with bypass diode conduction, and limitation of PV module operating voltage.
