Introduction

Switching operations of vacuum relays in power distribution lines generate high-energy transient overvoltages, which can cause insulation breakdown in high-voltage electronic equipment, devices, and power cables. Type G varistors (ZNR surge absorbers) are gapless-type surge arresters using zinc oxide sintered bodies, featuring excellent characteristics such as high energy handling capability, fast response time, and low clamping ratio. ZNR and Type G varistors are widely used to protect high-voltage motors, transformers, rectifiers, and the anticorrosion coatings of power cables against high-energy transient overvoltages/surges.
