Introduction

Electronic systems in almost all internal combustion engine-powered vehicles — such as ABS, direct ignition systems, airbag control systems, and wiper motors — are susceptible to damage from destructive voltage transients. AV varistors are TVS chips with suppression characteristics that provide protection over a temperature range of -55°C to +125°C (+150°C for AVY models). Thanks to improved internal energy distribution, these multilayer varistors deliver excellent transient energy absorption capability in a compact package. Compared to silicon TVS diodes, the AV series requires significantly less board space and pad area, giving designers greater PCB layout flexibility.
