Introduction

A varistor is a device characterized by a voltage-current response that supports rapid current flow under certain voltage conditions. The function of a varistor is to protect electronic components in circuits from overvoltage. Connected in parallel within a circuit, a varistor provides protective action. When a pulse (pulse current Is: determined by pulse voltage Vs and impedance Zs) is applied to the circuit, the pulse current (Is) clamps the pulse voltage within the varistor's clamping voltage Vc. Since the withstand voltage exceeds the maximum clamping voltage, the circuit is protected from pulse voltage damage over extended periods. Varistors serve as protective devices for electronic and electrical equipment by absorbing abnormal voltages and lightning pulses.
