Introduction

Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) is a nonlinear resistive component with zinc oxide (ZnO) as its primary constituent. Its resistance is highly sensitive to applied voltage: below the threshold voltage, the resistance is extremely high and only minimal current flows — analogous to a closed valve. When the voltage exceeds the threshold, the resistance drops sharply and current surges dramatically — analogous to an open valve. This characteristic enables suppression of abnormal overvoltages that commonly occur in circuits, thereby protecting them from overvoltage damage.

MOVs are widely used in photovoltaic systems, telecommunications, surge protective devices, power supplies, and outlets/receptacles to clamp transient overvoltages and absorb surge energy.
