Introduction

A varistor is a device with voltage-current characteristics that support rapid current flow under certain voltage conditions. The function of a varistor is to protect electronic components in circuits from overvoltage. Connected in parallel in a circuit, the varistor provides protection. When a pulse (pulse current Is: determined by pulse voltage Vs and impedance Zs) is applied to the circuit, the pulse current (Is) limits the pulse voltage within the clamping voltage Vc of the varistor. Since the withstand voltage is greater than the maximum clamping voltage, the circuit can be protected from pulse voltage damage over an extended period. Varistors can serve as protective devices for electronic and electrical equipment by absorbing abnormal voltages and lightning pulses.
