Introduction

Metal Oxide Varistors (MOV) are nonlinear resistive components with zinc oxide (ZnO) as the primary material. Their resistance is highly sensitive to applied voltage: below the threshold voltage, resistance is extremely high with minimal current flow — analogous to a closed valve; once the voltage exceeds the threshold, resistance drops sharply and current surges — analogous to an open valve. This characteristic enables suppression of abnormal overvoltages commonly occurring in circuits, protecting them from overvoltage damage. MOVs are widely used in photovoltaic, telecommunications, surge protection devices, power supplies, and outlet applications to clamp transient overvoltages and absorb surge energy.
