Introduction

Positive temperature coefficient devices provide overcurrent protection for electrical and electronic equipment. They operate by utilizing conductive metal strips embedded within a polymer matrix. Under normal conditions, the device resistance is near zero, but overcurrent conditions heat the PTC and cause the polymer to expand, increasing impedance. When current returns to normal, the component cools, restoring its original shape and very low resistance level.
