A polymer positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) thermistor is a resettable overcurrent protection device. Its core consists of a polymer matrix loaded with conductive particles. Under normal operating current, the device maintains a low-resistance state. When an overcurrent fault occurs, heat generated by the excessive current causes the polymer matrix to expand, disrupting the conductive pathways and driving resistance to rise sharply, thereby limiting the fault current to a low level. Once the fault is cleared and power is removed, the device cools and contracts, the conductive pathways re-form, and resistance returns to its initial low value — enabling automatic reset. The device provides reliable overcurrent protection and is suitable for a wide range of applications including automotive electronics, industrial control, consumer electronics, telecommunications equipment, and power management. Its self-resetting characteristic reduces maintenance requirements and enhances system reliability.
