Introduction

Positive temperature coefficient devices provide overcurrent protection for electrical and electronic equipment. They operate on the principle of conductive metal strips embedded within a polymer matrix. Under normal conditions, the device resistance is near zero; however, an overcurrent condition causes the PTC device to heat up and the polymer to expand, thereby increasing impedance. When the current returns to normal, the component cools down, restoring its original shape and ultralow resistance level.
