Introduction

Gas discharge tubes (GDTs) normally maintain a high insulation resistance state, equivalent to an open circuit, with virtually no effect on normal circuit operation. When a transient overvoltage occurs in the circuit and its amplitude exceeds the breakdown voltage of the GDT, the gas inside the tube is ionized, causing the GDT to conduct rapidly and clamp the overvoltage to a lower level, thereby protecting parallel-connected electronic equipment or circuit components from damage due to high-voltage surges. Once the overvoltage subsides, the GDT immediately returns to its high insulation resistance state and the circuit resumes normal operation. The 2RB-8 series GDTs are available in axial-lead or SMT packages. They are not only compact and easy to mount on various space-constrained PCBs, but also offer excellent performance. When used in high-frequency communication circuits, their low-capacitance characteristic minimizes signal interference. The high insulation resistance ensures no additional loss to circuit performance under normal operating conditions. The 2RB-8 series GDTs are suitable not only for protecting communication interfaces — their ability to withstand high surge currents (8/20μs, 10kA) also makes them well suited for power supply protection.
