TE Circuit Protection offers the widest selection of SMT fuses to meet diverse overcurrent protection application requirements. Our one-time chip fuses help protect electronic and electrical equipment from costly damage while creating a safe environment, with current ratings ranging from 0.5A to 20A to deliver consistent performance across applications.
TE Circuit Protection also offers the FT600 telecom fuse for telecommunications applications. This telecom fuse helps meet North American overcurrent protection requirements, including Telcordia, GR-1089, TIA-968-A (formerly FCC Part 68), and UL60950 Third Edition.
The multilayer chip fuse design offers the advantage of exposing more fuse element surface area to the glass-ceramic absorbing material. When the fuse element blows, more material is available to absorb the vaporized fuse metal, enabling highly efficient arc extinction.
The 2410 (6125) is a suspended-filament chip fuse designed for secondary overcurrent protection applications. PCB assembly technology has been incorporated into the design and manufacturing process of the 2410SFV fuse to achieve lead-free compliance and eliminate issues associated with traditional ceramic component end caps.
Fuses are temperature-sensitive devices, so operating temperature affects fuse performance and service life. Operating temperature should be taken into account when selecting a fuse current rating. The thermal derating curve for SMT fuses is shown in Figure SF4, which can be used to determine the derating percentage based on operating temperature and apply it to the derated system current.
Once the I²t value of the application waveform has been determined, derating must be applied based on the expected number of cycles over the system's service life. Since the stress induced by current pulses is inherently mechanical, the number of stress applications has a significant impact on the degree of derating required for the fuse rating. Figure SF5 illustrates the current pulse derating curves for our SMT chip fuses over up to 100,000 cycles.
Selecting an SMT fuse may seem straightforward — simply choose a fuse with a current rating slightly above the worst-case system operating current. In practice, however, it is not that simple, as derating factors for operating current and application temperature must be considered. Power-on events and other system operations — such as processor speed changes or motor startup — can cause current surges or spikes, which must also be accounted for when selecting a fuse. Therefore, choosing the right fuse for an application involves more than simply knowing the nominal system current.
Pulse-tolerant chip fuses feature high surge current capability for overcurrent protection in DC power supply systems. These devices combine silver fuse elements with a monolithic multilayer design, providing robust arc suppression characteristics. These RoHS-compliant SMT devices help enable more reliable, high-performance consumer electronics — such as laptops, multimedia devices, mobile phones, and other portable electronics.
