Introduction

Eaton is a world-leading supplier of Bussmann series medium voltage fuses. Every product is backed by an efficient global distribution network, along with unrivaled service and technical support. Eaton's circuit protection solutions comply with major international standards, including ANSI, BS, DIN, IEC, and UL.

Medium voltage fuses are generally classified into two categories: expulsion fuses and current-limiting fuses. As defined by ANSI C37.40: Expulsion Fuse: A vented fuse in which the expulsion effect of gases produced by the internal arc, either alone or aided by other mechanisms, results in current interruption. Expulsion fuses limit the duration of an overcurrent event but do not limit the magnitude of the fault current. Current-Limiting Fuse: A fuse unit that, when its current-responsive element is melted by a current within the fuse's specified current-limiting range, abruptly introduces a high resistance to reduce the magnitude and duration of the current, resulting in subsequent current interruption. When operating within its current-limiting range, a current-limiting fuse reduces the magnitude of fault current and limits the duration of the overcurrent event. Eaton offers an extensive range of current-limiting fuses for protecting feeder, transformer, and motor circuits per ANSI, BS, DIN, and IEC standards.

Current-limiting fuses are divided into three categories:

  1. Full-Range: As defined by ANSI C37.40, "a fuse that, when used at the maximum ambient temperature specified by the manufacturer, is capable of interrupting all currents from the maximum rated interrupting current down to the minimum continuous current that causes melting of the fusible element." It is capable of interrupting any current that causes its element to melt.
  2. General Purpose: As defined by ANSI C37.40, "a fuse capable of interrupting all currents from the maximum rated interrupting current down to the current that causes melting of the fusible element in one hour." Not all currents fall within this range. The fuse may be exposed to overcurrents below the value specified by the one-hour criterion. In such cases, a separate overcurrent protective device is required to interrupt the overcurrent.
  3. Backup: As defined by ANSI C37.40, "a fuse capable of interrupting all currents from the maximum interrupting rating down to the minimum interrupting rating." The minimum interrupting rating is the lowest current the fuse can properly clear. This requires a low-current interrupting device, such as a motor overload protective device, to be used in series with a backup-rated fuse.

In North America, current-limiting fuses are commonly classified as E-rated fuses and R-rated fuses. Eaton also offers an extensive range of Bussmann series current-limiting fuses compliant with BS, DIN, and IEC standards. E-rated fuses are used to protect feeder circuits, power transformers, and voltage transformers. E-rated fuses have current-response time characteristics specified by ANSI C37.46. E-rated fuses rated 100 amperes and below must melt within 300 seconds when the RMS current is between 200% and 240% of the continuous current rating. E-rated fuses rated above 100 amperes must melt within 600 seconds when the RMS current is between 220% and 264% of the fuse's continuous current rating. Eaton offers a variety of full-range and general-purpose E-rated fuses from 2.4 to 38 kV. R-rated fuses are backup fuses providing short-circuit protection for motor circuits. They are used in conjunction with medium voltage motor starters that provide overload protection for the circuit. R-rated fuses also have current-response time characteristics specified by ANSI C37.46. An R-rated fuse will melt within 15 to 35 seconds at a current equal to 100 times its "R" rating. Bussmann series R-rated fuses for motor circuit protection are voltage-rated from 2.4 to 8.3 kV.
