A phototransistor is a photodiode-amplifier combination integrated within a single silicon die. It can be thought of as a photodiode whose output current is fed into the base of a conventional transistor.
These photodiode-amplifier combinations are designed to overcome the primary limitation of photodiodes: unity gain. The typical gain of a phototransistor can range from 100 to over 1500. Many applications require greater output than a single photodiode can produce. Although a photodiode signal can be amplified through external circuitry (such as an op-amp), this is not always cost-effective. In such cases, a phototransistor offers a lower-cost alternative.
